CHIVALROUS U-BOAT COMMANDER SHIPS WARNED BEFORE BEING SUNK. HELP GIVEN TO CREWS IN BOATS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) HALIFAX (Nova Scotia), Jan. 12. Survivors from torpedoed ships relate what has' become a legendary story of a U-boat commander whose submarine, with a sunflower painted on the conning-tower, apparently is the lone representative of chivalry among the Nazi raiders. He has always warned ships before sinking them and attempted to help the crews. On one occasion he asked members, of a crew if they had sufficient supplies. The men yelled yes, but that they would like a drink, whereupon the U-boat commander tossed a couple of bottles of wine into the boat.
