CHIMES AGAIN
EXPERIMENTS WITH ELECTRIC CLOCK. MANY RESIDENTS INTERESTED. The chiming and striking of a clock, which could be heard in the; streets near the Post Office this aroused much speculation and interest ,t--on the part of residents who heard them, as ever since the earthquake of June 24 Masterton has been without the familiar chiming of the Post Office clock. Many people were quite pleased to hear the chimes again, as they have been greatly missed since the town lost its Post Office tower. The present arrangement is, however, purely of a temporary nature, and is ; s actually a demonstration in miniature of the possibilities of electricallycontrolled chiming from a master clock. The apparatus at present in use is located in the shop of Mr H. Byrn, Queen Street, who has constructed a master clock and amplifier to allow the experiments to be carried out. The whole system works automatically. At present only two speakers are in use, and these are installed under the verandah in front of the shop. If more speakers , were linked up and they were placed in a more advantageous position and the power amplified further, the chimes could be heard, it is stated, over the greater part of the town under favourable conditions. The experiments being carried out by Mr Byrn are at the request of the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, who will probably report to the Council later on the possibilities of installing a permanent system. Judging by the pleasure shown by residents this morning when they heard the chimes, such a move would be welcomed.
