HORSE BREEDING
“ROSSWOOD” STUD INSPECTED CUDDLE & PEERLESS. IN THE PADDOCKS NATIONAL SALES ENTRY. The breeding of stud racing horses under model farm conditions was apparent to a “Times-Age" representative when a visit was paid on. a recent afternoon to Mr T. R. George's “Rosswood” stud farm on the Upper Plain. Since taking over the property the whole place has been modernised and arranged for efficient running. On entering the property the cream painted fences, the orderly lay-out of the loose boxes and the number of horses in the paddocks strike the eye. Included among the well known horses inspected were the stallions Beaulivre, Defoe and Croupier. Beaulivre has developed into a fine looking fellow. Cuddle, the courageous mare who won the New Zealand Cup, the Auckland Cup twice running and many other good races in New Zealand and Australia, who was also seen is! in foal to Beaulivre. Peerless, who in 1959 raced Defaulter and Beaupartir to a heck and three-quarters of a length, respectively, in the Derby and won both the New Zealand and Great Northern Oaks, has shaped into a good looking mare. Expense, dam of Defaulter and Expanse, owned by Mr lan Macßae, is in foal to Coronach. Mr R. J. Murhy. of Wellington, owns Cuddle'and Peerless. The following mares owned by Mr George are in foal (the name of the sire is given in parentheses)Warden’s Gift (Chatsworthi, a full sister to Gold Salute: Phyto (Nizami); Royden Queen (Avarcur); Lady Baron (Si. Boswells); Tipperary Girl (Avarcur); Hororata (Chatsworth). Mr George's entry for the National Yearling Sales were seen in their loose boxes and they were a good looking lot. They include a bay colt by Defoe from Haughty Toti, related to Autopay, the well known handicap horse which won the Epsom Mile in Australia; a big chestnut colt by Croupier from Rangi’s Last, and half-brother to Namesake. Being a late foal the chestnut is particularly well developed and has a good Roman nose. Quite the pick of the bunch is a fine looking dark bay filly by Defoe from the unraced Tipperary Girl (Hurry OnPaper Money). The filly is a half-sister to Home Rule and is nicely developed. There is a smaller colt by Croupier from Lady Baron (Barralong-Tourquay), a relation of Martian. The dark bay filly is Lady Baron’s first youngster. Last but not least was a brown filly by Croupier from Tetrina. The filly looks the type that develops into an early winner. In a box but not intended for the sales was a handsome looking bay colt by Beau Here from Cuddle. If breeding is any criterion he should make a name for himself. The champion, Beau Vite, is expected from Australia in the near future and he will take up stud duties on the farm. The busy season at “Rosswood” has been passed and work on the place, in addition to the care of the remaining horses, is being concentrated on improving the property.
