GANGSTER ARMY

BODYGUARD FOR LAVAL. AID TO CARRYING OUT NAZI ORDERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 10. Aiming to strengthen his own position and carry out German orders more effectively, Laval has formed a bodyguard named the National Militia, says the diplomatic correspondent of “The Times.” This private army numbering probably 10,000, will to some extent replace the armistice army mobilised under German instructions when the warships were scuttled at Toulon. But more important for Laval., it will co-operate with the police against what Vichy calls internal enemies. The militia will consist, first, of gangs of toughs originally raised as the semimilitary vanguard of the Petain Legion, but it had been separated from the legion and put directly under the orders of Laval as head of the Government.
