FAMOUS SUBMARINE
OVERDUE & CONSIDERED LOST SANK 69,000 TONS OF AXIS SHIPPING. INCLUDING ITALIAN CRUISER. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.’5 p.m.) RUGBY, January 10. The Admiralty announces that his Majesty’s submarine Utmost, one of the most famous of British submarines, is overdue and must, be considered lost. By March, 1942, the Utmost had accounted for 69,000 tons of Axis shipping. Her successes included an Italian cruiser. The Utmost was launched in April, 1940, and was formerly commanded by Commander R. D. Cayley, D.S.O. Lieutenant Coombe assumed command of the Utmost in August, ’942.
