The United States Secretary for War, Mr Stimson, in announcing new restrictions, said that from January 15 no package may be despatched to a soldier overseas unless it contains articles requested by a soldier and approved by his commander. A package will not be accepted unless a written request bearing the commander’s approval is presented. Magazines and newspapers may be mailed only by publishers, and only if the soldier is a subscriber. Letters will continue to be welcomed by the army. The new regulations were adopted when a survey disclosed that mail sent overseas in November was equivalent to the capacity of three Liberty shins. If continued, it would have required 25 ships to carry mail this year.
