OUTLOOK CRITICAL
FOR GERMANS RETREATING ON ROSTOV SOME BEING OUTPACED BY RUSSIANS. MORE SOVIET SUCCESSES IN STALINGRAD. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.0 a.m.,) RUGBY, January 8. The Russians, continuing to thrust down the Lower Don, have extended their hold on the area south of the river and north of the main railway. They are now no more than 90 miles east of Rostov and may be nearer. London military observers note that the offensive in this direction may soon be effectively threatening Rostov, placing the Germans in the Caucasus in a critical position. At present, in the Central Caucasus, the Germans falling back on the Kuma River ate still three times further from Rostov than the Russians advancing down the Don. A morning Soviet communique reports the continued success of storm detachments and patrol parties in the Stalingrad factory area and north-west of the city. Considerable enemy resistance on the Lower Don is -also reported. On the central front, the Russians have consolidated positions and repelled counter-attacks, and in the Northern Caucasus the Russians have continued their offensive and occupied several localities.
