RAIL TRAVEL
RESTRICTIONS REMOVED. AS FROM TUESDAY NEXT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Restrictions on rail travel will be removed, for the present, from and including Tuesday. January 12. Intending passengers by railway in the North Island will therefore not be required to obtain a permit to travel more than 100 miles. The War Cabinet’s decision to this effect was announced yesterday by the Minister of Railways, Mr Semple. The Minister said, however, that the accommodation available for the general public on long-distance trains in the North Island would still be considerably limited, and prospective passengers would be well advised to take advantage of the reserved seat system; otherwise they might be disappointed. Reservations would not be made more than two weeks ahead, and applicants would probably find that at times it would not be possible to allocate seats on any particular train or date. It should be understood, said Mr Semple, that the question of travel restrictions would be reviewed from time to time, and there was a possibility of permits being again required at some future date.
“The necessity for people restricting their travel to essential journeys only still exists,” he added, “so that the Railways Department can give the fullest service in the national interest.”
