1 TURF TOPICS 1 THE CHAMP IN FORM AGAIN. > ' HIGH CLASS AS A STAYER. ’ A useful fourth went to Le Serena on the first day at Marton an’d it was ; no surprise when the bay filly improv-. ' ed to take first helping in the Junction Plate on the second day. La Serena is trained in Hastings by J. H. ' Jefferd and was bred by Mr J. T. Jameson of Tuhitarata. By Phaleron Bay from Martian Lady, La Serena is a full sister to Dominate and great things are expected of her. Incidentally “Joe” Jameson has a single entry in the yearling sales this month, which is stated to be the best-looking youngster he has yet bred. He is a DefoePecunia colt and is a half-brother to Blue Border. A Good One. Daljarrock, a Theio-Gay Lass chestnut horse, played up a lot in the birdcage at the opening day of the Marton meeting. In view of his display of waywardness it was not surprising that he was at good odds. In the race he was up with Koi Ragi all the way but received a check over the final stages to finish in second place. Daljarrock has a good long stride and should be an improver for the Trentham meeting. High Class a Stayer. High Class, yet another of the successful Bulandshar progeny, won the Marton Cup in convincing style. He paid a good price. High Class has proved that he is a stayer and there should be. better things ahead. A Good Dividend. Vitement, an Awapuni trained horse, justified its selection for the Marton meeting by winning the Hurdles, after being left at the post, to return a good ] double figure dividend. Vitement is a I seven-year-old brown horse by Raceful from Persis and will bear watching for a good hurdle race in the future. The Champ Again. The Champ, owned by Mr S. J. Newland and trained by T. R. 'George at Opaki, came back on the winning list on the second day of the Marton meeting. There was a lot of money on the' machine for the bay. gelding on the first day but the brilliant Koi Ragi had too much pace for The Champ and the others. On the second day The Champ was again well supported and without Koi Ragi in the race was able to notch a close win from Pay Roll. The Champ may be expected to go on improving from now on. Kindergarten In. Added interest has been given to the Wellington Cup race at Trentham on January 16 by the entry of Kindergarten. Just what weight he will carry remains to be seen but it will probably be close to the eleven stone mark. Even with that impost the son of Kincardine should take a power of beating.
