SENSATIONAL SUICIDE

CHARRED WRECK OF CAR BODY OF MAN FOUND NEARBY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 5. A sensational suicide discovery was made this morning on a lonely part of Atkinson Road, half a mile from the main Titirangi Road turnoff and about a mile and a half from the Titirangi Hotel, when a large modern sedan car was found completely burned out, with the body of a man lying about 30 feet away.

The charred wreck of the car was at the top of a short, steep incline close to the road and apparently had been set on-pfirei aid of two fourgallon tins of petrol. One was found under the bonnet and the other in the back of the vehicle.

The body was in a recumbent position on rough ground, with the throat deeply cut back to the ears. A bloodstained razor was nearby and a few yards away was part of a set of false teeth. The body was almost without clothes.

The crackling noise of fire was heard about 4 o’clock this morning by a woman who lives in the vicinity, but the burnt car was not seen till she went to her front gate three hours later. The police were immediately advised and before a constable’s arrival a 15-year-old boy discovered the body of the dead man. The police inquiries have not resulted in positive identification, but the body is believed to be that of a man known as Harry George Evans, who was interviewed by the police on Sunday in connection with his military obligations. It is stated that he said he was about 48 years old and boarded at Remuera. Evans is believed to have been single and to have come from Christchurch about a year ago. The motor-car was his and was registered in Christchurch.
