STRUGGLE FOR POWER
IN FRENCH NORTH AFRICA POLITICIANS COMPETING FEVERISHLY. THINGS SAID TO BE MOVING FAST. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 4. “A considerable number of French politicians of all shades and denominations are in North Africa struggling for political power,” said Charles Collingwood, the National Broadcasting Company’s correspondent, broadcasting from Algiers. “This competition is feverish and sometimes violent,” he said. “It is more than a struggle for control of North Africa, it is a struggle for a change' in control of post-war France. “The attitude of the Allies hitherto has been ‘hands off, it is a French affair,’ but we have a certain responsibility and things are moving fast.”
FULL CONFIDENCE IN GIRAUD’S LEADERSHIP. DECLARED BY GOVERNOR OF WEST AFRICA. LONDON, January 4. M. Boisson. Governor-General of French West Africa, broadcasting from Dakar tonight on his return from a conference of the French Council in Algiers, said that the Allied landing in North Africa had put France well on the way to victory.
“We have full confidence in the leadership of General Giraud,” he said, “and ardently desire to participate in the fight. We gladly submit to General Giraud’s orders. “Our share of the battle of liberation will be largely facilitated by, United States support. Our activities will considerably increase in the future.”
