NEW ZEALAND AIRMEN
INCLUDING MASTERTON SERGEANT *IN ACTION OFF COAST OR NORWAY. SUCCESSFUL ATTACKS ON AXIS SHIPS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, December 30. A New Zealand Hampden, of a tor-pedo-bomber squadron, sank another Gorman supply ship off Stadlandet, Norway, on December 29, bringing its total to nine. The aircraft was piloted by the former Wimbledon tennis player, Flight Lieutenant A. J. Mottram, members of the crew including Flight Sergeants F. McPherson, Rotorua, and E. A. Hurley, New Plymouth. A second aircraft, captained by a Danish, pilot, and with a crew including Sergeant D. E. Nelson, Masterton, sighted a ednvoy of three supply ships, accompanied by four flak ships. They attacked the biggest ship and encountered fierce anti-aircraft fire. Then, after dropping their torpedoes, they entered low clouds. Returning after some minutes they saw the ship, with its bows pointing shorewards, almost hidden by a cloud of smoke. Flak hit the Danish pilot’s aircraft, but it reached its base safely.
