I am curious to see how the Mayor of Tokio will feel when his city is wrecked by bombs.” A Chinese communique states that the Japanese have made further advances in the mountainous angle southward of the Yangtse River, in the Hupeh and Anhwei provinces. Heavy fighting is continuing at the north-west tip of the angle, where the enemy has converged. Columns of Japanese have again occupied HushuL midway between Hankow and Kuikang. The Japanese have captured Kweangtsi, 32 miles farther south-eastward and also Taihu and Tsionshan. The Chinese recaptured Tsienshanchi, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy.. The Chinese have also recaptured Lishan. Fighting continues on the Honan-Shantung border, where the Chinese threw, back the enemy. The retreating Japanese burned countless houses and killed a large number of civilians.
