VAST EXPANSION
IN CANADIAN WAR EFFORT
NEW HIGH COMMISSIONER’S
SURVEY.
ARMED FORCES & INDUSTRY.
(By Telegraph—(Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 1.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day.
When the war started, Canada's Navy had twelve ships; it now had 500. This was one feature of Canada’s war effort mentioned by the new Canadian High Commissioner to Australia, Justice T. C. Davis, when he arrived in Sydney. Mr Justice Davis succeeds Major-General V. W. Odium, who has been appointed Canada's first Minister to China.
Although the Canadian Government has power to conscript men for military service overseas, it has not yet found compulsion necessary. The Army, which had 4,500 men up to the outbreak of war, now has 350.000, exclusive of the Home Reserve of 150,000. The Canadian Air Force, which had 5,000 men at the outbreak of war, now has 133,000, with 25 operational squadrons in Britain. Canada is producing warplanes, including Lancaster bombers, at the rate of over 4000 a year.
