Encouraging & perhaps FAVOURABLE STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT. DUTCH ADMIRAL PREDICTS BITTER STRUGGLE. ■;/ ' • (By Telegraph-Press Association— Copyright) WASHINGTON, December 29. President Roosevelt conferred with Vice-Admiral C. L. Helfrich and later told the Press that the Far Eastern war outlook was encouraging and perhaps even favourable. Reporters referred to the Java Sea battle, and Vice-Admiral Helfrich replied that Mr Roosevelt had brought up nothing that was past. Asked how soon Java might be retaken, he replied: “I would like to be optimistic, but cannot. It will be a long and bitter struggle. The Japs will fight to the end.” . , , Vice-Admiral Helfrich reminded the Press that units of the Dutch navy and air force were now operating under General MacArthur. Vice-Admiral Helfrich shortly leaves for Australia.
