ATTACKED BY AMERICAN BOMBERS NUMBER OF ENEMY FIGHTERS ' . DESTROYED. PART OF GOODS TRAIN ' BLOWN UP. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) RUGBY, December 30. It is officially announced that heavy bombers of the United States Army Air Force attacked submarine pens at Lorient this afternoon. The weather was good. Squadrons of R.A.F., Dominion and Allied, fighters made covering and supporting sweeps, but did not encounter any enemy aircraft. A formation of enemy fighters which attempted to intercept the bombers in the target area were fought off and a number were destroyed. Details are not yet available. Later dn the afternoon American fighters, on an offensive patrol over the Boulogne-Abbeville area, attacked a goods train. The last three wagons were seen to explode. From the day’s operations three bombers are missing.
