STATE THEATRE

“THIEF OF BAGDAD.” Tonight one of the greatest dramas ever to be brought to the screen will be shown. Depicted in beautiful colours, “The Thief of Bagdad” provides a series of brilliant and thrilling scenes which are seldom seen on the screen. The acting is of a high standard, and there is nothing gruesome about the picture despite its sensational character. The various dramatic situations follow quickly on one another, and provide audience with plenty of material to keep their attention. closely engaged. The entrancing colouring of the picture will make an immediate appeal, the whole picture providing excellent entertainment. “The Thief of Bagdad” stars Sabu, Conrad Veidt, June Duprez and John Justin. It abounds in scenes unwinding breathtaking magic—magic which transforms a stony desert into an enchanted city; a flying horse which flies into the clouds and returns to the spot whence it took off; a Djinni who is released from a tiny bottle and becomes as high as the highest mountain and towers over the City of Bagdad; the Black Galleon, mystery ship sailed by a wicked magician; and the Flying Carpet, which goes from city to city like an aeroplane. The matinee on Wednesday afternoon will commence at 2.15 o’clock. There will be a late session on New Year’s Eve, at the conclusion of the ordinary programme, when the latest and most brilliant Shirley Temple picture, “Miss Annie Rooney,” will be shown. Matinees will be held on New Year’s Day, commencing at 2.15 p.m., on Saturday at the same hour, and on Monday afternoon.
