OPAKI NOTES

KENTUCKY IN WORK AGAIN. PIASTRE’S MARTON CUP PROSPECTS. When the early morning mist lifted conditions were ideal for track work at the Opaki racecourse today. Trainers T. R. George, B. J. Kelleher and A. Jenkins had members of their teams out for exercise and good useful work was carried out. ■ Gamble and Piastre did good working gallops on the plough. Piastre has picked up a lot since his New Zealand Cup engagement and will strip a very different liorse for his Marton Cup engagement on Friday. He will carry the light impost of 7.7 and as the Salmagundi horse is a born stayer the distance, which is one and a quarter miles, should not trouble him. Although he has not done anything brilliant since his Auckland Cup win Piastre should salute the judge for a worth while race before his racing days are over. Although he is an aged horse he looked a picture of fitness this morning. In view of the form shown at recent race meetings by the heavier weighted horses engaged' in the Marton Cup, however, Piastre can only be regarded as having an outside chance. Oleon and Indian Sign ran. four furlongs on the course proper in 50secs., Oleon shading Indian Sign. Oleon is a pacy track worker, but to date has failed to produce at race meetings his good track form. Indian Sign is engaged at Marton on Friday in the McManaway Memorial of six furlongs. He cannot be supported on. his track work to Gate. However, he is inclined to be a lazy worker and is very fit so there is every chance of him improving on his recent public performances. Indian Sign’s stable mate, The Champ, will run in the same race and should soon make amends for his recent defeats. The Champ went on to Marton from the Manawatu meeting last Sat-

urday. An interesting worker this morning was the old public favourite, Kentucky. It will be remembered that Kentucky and others in Mr George’s team, which was then domiciled at Trentham, were injured when the stallion Croupier broke out of his stall. Kentucky is looking as good as ever and present intentions are that he will run on the second day at the Wellington Club’s next meeting. Ashley Jenkins had Gay Fox, Cheerful Lady and Full Light working on the plough this morning. Yesterday morning Full Light and Cheerful Lady ran half a mile in 50secs. on the course proper. For a maiden, it. was an outstanding effort for Full Light. B. J. Kelleher has in hand a'fine looking Nightly-Miss Physcology three-vear-olcl. In addition to being good looking it is particularly ami-J able and a stable door bolt has no mysteries for it and it can easily open a gate. It is not being hurried in its preparation and should go well in the future.
