IN LAND FIGHTING IN TUNISIA
British Troops Withdrawn From Hill Position ALLIED AIR ATTACKS KEPT UP BRISKLY TRUCKS FROM TRIPOLITANIA STRAFED NEAR BORDER LONDON, Doconihor- 29. In Tunisia, British light patrols are in contact with the enemy in the northern area. A communique from Washington states that light_ enemy units attacked one of the American positions; but they met with'no success. Allied forces have withdrawn from the hill position six miles north of Mejez El Bab, where there was heavy fighting ' at the end of last week. Our withdrawing troops inflicted severe casualties on the enemy. Further south, the French have withdrawn slightly at one point. Elsewhere they have advanced six miles and captured an important road. Allied bombers and fighters are busy attacking behind the enemy lines. They destroyed twelve enemy vehicles in attacks on transport. Six enemy planes have been destroyed in the latest Tunisian operations for the loss of two Allied machines. One formation of American fighters attacked enemy transports carrying troops, petrol and supplies near the borders of Tunisia and Tripolitania. Twenty trucks were destroyed. A correspondent says the trucks were part of Rommel’s transport, retreating out of Tripolitania. Middle East bombers attacked the ports of Tunis and La Goulette on Sunday night. Yesterday Flying Fortresses attacked the docks at Sousse. No aircraft were lost in these 3, stacks Troops of the British Eighth Army are still in, contact with the enemy at Wadi Bei, a deep watercourse which runs across the coastal road ten miles from Buerat.
