MUNICH SET ABLAZE
ATTACK BY R.A.F. BOMBERS ENCOUNTERS WITH NIGHT FIGHTERS. TWELVE BRITISH PLANES LOST. LONDON, December 22. Giant foui'-eiigined bombers took part in the lLA.F’’s. raid on Munich last night. They flew (100 miles from their home base and dropped what is described officially as a great weight of bombs 'on this key city of southern Germany. Munich, besides being the official headquarters of the Nazi Party, is an important centre of war industry, having railway, engineering and armament works. Aircraft crews report that the city was weakly defended by guns. There were few searchlights and not much anti-aircraft fire, though there were plenty of night fighters above the clouds. In the bright moonlight there were many dog-fights. Plenty of buildings were left well ablaze. Twelve R.A.F. bombers were lost. Two German night fighters were shot down.
SCATTERED RAIDS ON BRITAIN. Several hit and run raiders attacked scattered, towns and villages in southeast England. They attacked one at a time, undei’ cover of low cloud. The defences were ready and two were shot down. High explosives and incendiaries destroyed a school, as well as some houses. Some people were killed and several were very seriously injured.
