PLANE FORCED DOWN
SEARCH NORTH OF WESTPORT PILOT AND FOUR PASSENGERS 1 ABOARD. ATTEMPT TO LAND ON SEA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HOKITIKA, December 20. A special ZKIAGP A Dragon Fly twin-engined machine, piloted by Flight Lieutenant A. C. Baines, of Christchurch, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, on loan to Air Travel Ltd., left the Hokitika Aerodrome for Nelson at 8.25 a.m. Twenty minutes after passing tyestport a wireless message was received from the plane saying: “One engine cut out.” A second message stated: “Propeller missing.” The next message said: “Will attempt a landing on the sea.” Captain Mercer said the position of the plane would be approximately Karamea Bight. Captain Mercer left in a Fox Moth machine, piloted by Pilot Officer Onpenshaw. They carried a rubber boat and life saving equipment fro.m Hokitika. The passengers were Albert Johnson, of Hokitika; A. Walters, of Haast; Mr Hardv of Haast, and Mr Mcßride, of Westport. The latter was taken on at Westport. Two Air Force planes are out searching. The regular passenger plane was notified and she landed her passengers at Westport and went in search. She was piloted by Flight Lieutenant Lewis. *
