ABEL TASMAN MEMORIAL

NATIONAL PARK OPENED. OFFICIAL CEREMONY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NELSON, December 20. The official opening of Abel Tasman National Park, a coastal area of nearly 38,000 acres on the western side ot Tasman Bay, was performed by the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, at a ceremony held at Kaiteriteri beach yesterday afternoon It was originally proposed to hold this part of the Tasman tercentennial celebrations at Torrent Bay within the new park area, but threatened rough weather during the morning resulted in cancellation of the launch trip across the bay and the transference of the ceremony to Kaiteriteri, a more convenient and almost equally picturesque spot, a few miles east of the park boundaiy.
