Wairarapa Times-Age SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1942. AN ACT OF VINDICATION.
« —. — JMAGINATION falters in an attempt to envisage in their details the horrors that have been and are being inflicted from day to day upon innocent and unoffending Jews in Ger-man-occupied Europe, but every human being worthy of the name will, applaud and support the declaration, communicated to the House of Commons on Thursday by Mr Eden, in which the United Nations reaffirm their solemn resolve to ensure that those responsible for these crimes shall not escape retribution, and to press oh with the necessary practical measures to that end. Not Jess to be welcomed is Mr Eden’s assurance that it. was certainly intended that “all persons who could properly be held responsible for these crimes, whether perpetrators or ringleaders, should alike be brought to book.” The carnival of atrocity and murder in which hundreds of thousands of Jews have been done to death and millions have been vilely maltreated is far enough from being the only crime to be laid at the door of the Nazis and for which retribution must be exacted, but it is unsurpassed in bestiality and ferocity. * An inflexible enforcement by the United Nations of the retribution and punishment to which they arc pledged is demanded not alone in sympathy with the cruelly martyred Jewish people, but most imperatively in order that standards of humanity and civilisation may be upheld and firm foundations laid for future peace. The fiendish attack upon the Jews into which the German nation, and some of its satellites have been led or dragooned by a bloodthirsty degenerate violates every true instinct of humanity and principle of law. If the world is to know a better future, this frightful lapse into barbarism must be dealt with drastically and inexorably, not in a spirit of revenge, but because it is incompatible with the continued existence of civilisation that
unspeakable crimes, carried out -with calculating deliberation, should be condoned and allowed to go unpunished.
