WAIRARAPA SOUTH MEETING OF COUNCIL. HOME GUARD AND PETROL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The business of the Wairarapa South County Council was continued at Carterton yesterday afternoon, after the “Times-Age” went to press, Councillor F. Court presiding. Mr L. J. Fairbrothcr, representing the»Carterton Home Guard division, waited on the council in regard to the petrol allowance to members of the Home Guard who travelled five miles for drill. Mr Fairbrother stated that all accounts rendered to the council had been rigidly checked by himself. Guardsmen travelling under five miles did not get petrol, which, he thought, was unfair. He hoped the local bodies would take the matter up and endeavour to get the Government to face up to their'job. , . Councillor A. E. Reid moved that in the event of the county continuing to pay a subsidy for petrol for the use of Home Guardsmen, the Government be asked to reimburse local bodies and supply petrol to all Home Guardsmen. The motion was carried. The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) and deputy-Mayor (Mr E. McKenzie) waited upon the council in regard to an ambulance to be shared by borough and county. After the deputation had outlined the facts the council resolved that the question be deferred until more information had been furnished. Councillor C. A. Cameron wrote tendering his resignation as a councillor owing to his inability to travel. The chairman said Cr Cameron had been a valued member for the Maungaraki Riding for 28 years and all regretted the step he had taken. He moved that the resignation be accepted with regret- and that the services of Cr Cameron be placed on record. The motion was seconded by Cr M. McGregor and carried. It was decided that a letter be forwarded to Cr Cameron expressing appreciation of his services over a long period of years. The vacancy will be filled by the council after the New Year. It was decided that the next meet ing be held on February 11. It was decided that the county staff harvest cocksfoot grass seed from county roads. Mr H.' H. Pavitt, county engineer, reported on the damage caused by earthquakes to the Kokotau and Wainuioru bridges. He was’ instructed to prepare estimates for repairs to both structures. On the motion of Councillor A. McGregor, seconded by Cr J. K. Strang, it was decided that Messrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt arrange with the Public Works Department and the Masterton County to take land under the Public Works Act on the northern side of the Taueru bridge in connection with the proposal to erect a new bridge. „ j It was decided that Messrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt be asked to prepare a survey and plans for a new bridge over the Ruamahanga River near the Gladstone Hotel, and that they confer with the Public Works Department in regard to the best method to adopt in reconditioning the old bridge.
