USE' OF SUMMER SPRAYS QUANTITIES FOR SMALL USERS. CONTROL OF FRUIT DISEASES. A table of summer sprays has been prepared by Mr Mason Davey, Government Orchard Instructor, for the benefit of householders who require the formulae in quantities convenient for small users. Details are: Bordeaux Mixture. For control of fungus disease in potatoes, tomatoes, apples, pears. Formula: 31b bluestone, 11b hydrated lime, 121 gallons water; 6ozs bluestone, Bozs hydrated lime, 7 gallons water; 3ozs bluestone, 4ozs hydrated lime, 31 gallons water. To prepare, dissolve bluestone in Water, slack lime in equal quantity of water, then pour the contents together simultaneously into a third vessel. Lime Sulphur. For control of leaf mould in tomatoes, mildew on onions, apples, delphiniums, hollyhocks or rust on stone fruits: , 1 pint lime surphur, 18 gallons water; J- pint lime sulphur, 9 gallons water; | pint lime sulphur, 4| gallons water; 1 tablespoon lime sulphur, 1 gallon water. White Summer Emulsified Oil. For control of scale insects on citrus trees or red mite and scales on apple trees. 1 pint oil, 12 gallons water; J- pint oil, 3 gallons water. To emulsify oil add an equal quantity of water to the oil, agitate until an emulsion is secured, then gradually add the balance of the water. Arsenate of Lead. For, control of codlin moth, leaf roller caterpillar, pear leech and other chewing insects. ?,lb arsenate of lead, 31b hydrated lime, 12 gallons water; loz arsenate of lead, 3ozs hydrated lime, 3 gallons of water. Preparation: Mix arsenate of lead in small quantity of water, slack lime in equal quantity, strain lime water and add to lead; then make up to full dilution. The hydrated lime being added to the arsenate of lead to prevent burning of the foliage and increase adhesion. Black Leaf 40 (Nicotine Sulphate). For control of aphides, white cabbage butterfly and diamond-back moth. 3 pint black leaf 40, 25 gallons water; loz black leaf 40, 5 gallons water; 1 teaspoon black leaf 40, 1 gallon water. Dissolve small quantity of soap in water or add small quantity of emulsified oil to release the nicotine.
