A Cairo communique states: “Our leading forces, though still greatly impeded by mines, have continued to harass the retreating enemy, and are now well west of El Agheila. Machine-gun attacks by night fighters, which operated as far west as Nofilia, were followed yesterday by intense light-bomber and fighter-bomber raids. Vehicles on roads presented better targets-' and pilots report a great column of traffic moving westward. At least one enemy fighter 1 was shot down during small-scale air battles. “Allied heavy bombers on Monday night successfully attacked Naples, causing large fires in harbour areas. Tunis and La Goulette were attacked in force on the same night, hits being scored on ships, jetties and fuel depots. The railway between Susa and Sfax was also attacked. Naval aircraft scored a torpedo hit on a beached vessel near Susa. “At least four south-bound enemy transport aircraft in a heavily-escorted air convoy were shot down by our fighters off Lampedusa Island. Two small enemy vessels were also attacked off the coast of Tunis. “Four of our planes are missing.”
