BOROUGH AFFAIRS
CARTERTON COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. CLOSING OF HIGHWAY TO TRAFFIC. (“Times-Age” Special.! The monthly meeting o£ the Carterton Borough Council was held last night at the Carterton Council Chambers. The Mayor, Mr D. _ L. Taverner, presided, there being also present: Councillors W. A. Hart, E. McKenzie, L. M. Clark, C, E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, Howard E. Jackson and Miss O. W. Wolters. The treasurer reported a debit balance to the district fund account of £B6 19s. A credit balance ox £440 14s 3d was shown in the gasworks account. Second Lieutenant H. G. Hughan, Adjutant di: the Greytown Home Guard, thankfed the council bn behalf of commanding officer Major H. G. Carter, for assistance given the battalion during the last 12 months. The secretary of the Carterton E.P.S. wrote asking for assistance in the purchase of a trailer ambulance. • The Mayor and Councillor McKenzie were appointed _ a deputation to confer with the Wairarapa South County Council in the matter. Messrs Hart and Tucker wrote in regard to the earthouake damage to Mr-W. Jackson’s buildiitg, occupied by Mrs Webster and S. Dwane. It was decided that the clerk write stating that the council expected the work of demolition be put in hand at once. The Returned Services' Association wrote enclosing a plan for 110 plots required by the R.S.A. at the Clareville Cemetery. It was decided that the plan be approved. It was resolved that the Building Inspector be asked to report regarding the Regent picture theatre. Mr L. Gaskin was appointed assistant dog inspector to the borough. The Council decided that if Mr Leggett were not prepared to demolish his storeroom in Pembroke Street, the Borough Council wbitld do the work and charge him with the cost. , It was resolved that rates not paid by February 11 be subject to a 10 per cent penalty. ' It was decided to close the main highway between Pembroke Street and Belvedere Street as far as motor cats were concerned on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The clerk reported that £lll3 had been collected in respect to changes for earthquake damage and that £466 was outstanding. It was decided that the borough offices be closed from December 24 till January 4. The Mayor extended to the councillors and staff the compliments of the season, which Councillor Mckc.nzie heartily reciprocated.
