CLASH WITH HITLER
VON HALDER’S RESIGNATION. REPORTED EXPLANATION. (By Telegraph—(Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 13. “The Times” correspondent on the German frontier gives the following explanation of why General von Halder has been superseded by General Zeitzler as German Chief of Staff, As this winter approached, Halder urged Hitler to abandon the attempt to capture Stalingrad and suggested instead that he should fill North Africa with men and planes and ,use a substantial segment of the Luftwaffe for retaliation bombings against England. Halder, because of the complete exhaustion of the German mineral oil reserves, urged that the German offensive should be focused on one vital point. Hitler, for political reasons, insisted that the assault on Stalingrad should continue at all costs, and Halder resigned early in September. Hitler, against the advice of all his experts, is carrying on the war as though his resources were still as lavish as at the outbreak and as though the United Nations’ production had not overtaken that of the Axis.
