FURIOUS NAZI EFFORTS

BAULKED BV RED ARMY THE BATTLES SOUTH-WEST OF STALINGRAD. SOVIET ARTILLERY PLAYING MAIN PART. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, December 13. German opposition in Russia is increasing on all fronts, particularly south-west of Stalingrad against the Russian drive towards Kotelniko.vo. The Russians north-west of Stalingrad have captured a further strongly-for-tified German line and are steadily narrowing the already perilous enemy positions between the Don and Volga. Fighting during the past two days has reached its greatest intensity south-west of Stalingrad, where the Germans are stabbing with attack after attack, trying to' puncture the southern of the two Russian tentacles encircling 2G0.000 Axis troops between the Don and the Volga. The latest front line messages tonight say battles raged all day on at least four separate sectors south-west of Stalingrad, with the Germans frequently switching the ■ ’direction of their counter-attacks in attempts to find a weak spot. The enemy’s thrusts thus far have been baulked, but after a 24 hours’ struggle the savage battle has not slackened. The Russian artillery is playing a main part .in halting the Axis .rushes. Colonel Vassiliev, a Russian military commentator, said: “The Germans south-west of Stalingrad are counterattacking increasingly and the enemy has strengthened his defences considerably, digging in in some sectors with a large number of tanks.” The situation is similar north-west of Stalingrad, where the Russians have had to fight hard to check six German counter-attacks. The Germans are also counter-attacking without a pause at the main points on the central front, and where the Russians are advancing it is only by degrees. General Zhukov has thrown in powerful forces for a new push southwards from Rzhev. The Germans are repeatedly counter-attacking eastwards of Velikiye Luki. Reports from most sectors indicate that Russian progress is slowing up, although the Germans are not actually regaining ground. General Rodimstev’s men inside Stalingrad city keep gnawing at the enemy's strongholds. They captured 200 blockhouses last week and have smashed up eighteen pillboxes in the past 24 hours.

The latest Moscow special communique brings the total of enemy killed and disabled in Russia to over eight millions.
