VIOLENT FIGHTING

CONTINUES ON RUSSIAN FRONT SOVIET FORCES GAIN GROUND. SEVEN MILE ADVANCE IN ONE SECTOR. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) LONDON, December 10. Violent fighting- continues northwest of Moscow, where the Germans launched a number of counter-attacks. The Russians, however, have gained further ground. The Moscow radio says west of Rjev the Russians have occupied four more populated points. After a prolonged battle near one village the Russians routed a German motorised battalion, in hand-to-hand fighting. In the Velikiye Luki area the Russians have advanced seven miles and captured thirteen populated places. Reuter’s Moscow correspondent says the Germans south-west of Stalingrad have improved their defences. They have dug in tanks, as firing points, to reinforce their lines and at present are launching frequent ' counter-attacks against the infiltrating Russians. A Berlin report states that the Russians in the Kalach area, west of Stalingrad, have brought up reinforcements and fierce fighting is progressing between the Don and the Volga.
