GUN DOG TRIALS

1942 CHAMPIONSHIPS HIGH STANDARD IN MAIN EVENTS. MR W. NIX, FEATHERSTON, WINS AGGREGATE. The 1942 championships of the Wairarapa Gun Dog Club were held at Mr H. Nee's property, Opaki Road, yesterday. Entries were very satisfactory and some close finishes made the task of the judge, Mr C. E. Grey, a difficult one. In both the land and water sections of the All Breed Championship of Wairarapa there was some very high-class work, and the entries of Messrs W. Nix (Featherston), M. A. Rawlins and T. Beetham, of Masterton, showed up conspicuously. The winner of the All Breed event, Mr W. Nix's Labrador Judy, was at her best, and her win was well deserved and very popular. K Members and supporters of the club were pleased to see in his old place with the shooters Corporal H. K. Smith, who is on furlough. The thanks of the club arc due to Messrs Fred Allen and Geo. Birkett, who also took the guns. Thanks arc also extended to the judge. Mr C. E. Grey, who is patron of the club and who later distributed the trophies to the various winners; to the donors of cash and trophies, to the competitors and to the committee in particular for combining to make the outing such an enjoyable one. The following are the results:— Wairarapa All Breed Championship (aggregate): Mr W. Nix’s (Featherston). Labrador, Judy, 181 points (Mr W. H. Trengrove’s trophy and Gage Cup), 1; Mr M. A. Rawlins’s (Masterton),; Labrador, Cleopatra May, F.T.Ch., 180 points (Mr W. H. Trengrove’s trophy and Pearce Cup), 2; Mr Trevor Beetham’s (Masterton), Labrador,- Cleopatra 11., 175 points, 3. Water section: Judy 98pts (Mr W. Harding’s trophy). Cleopatra May 96, Cleopatra II 92. Land section: Cleopatra May 84 (Mr F. Yule's trophy), Judy and Cleopatra II 83 (equal). There were eight entries. Pointer and Setter Championship: Mr G. F. Birkett’s Irish Setter, Basulo Belle (Mr D. Andrews’s trophy), 67 points, 1; Mr S. Geary’s Pointer, Stamford Statesman, 63 points, 2; Master Peter Alien's Pointer, Wyndrum Lad, and Mr B. Salisbury’s Irish Setter, Redstone Queen Saba, 62 points (equal third).

Spaniel Championship (Mr F. Yule’s trophy): Mr D. P. Donald’s Springer Spaniel, Roderick of Three Star, 80 points, 1; Mr A. Atkinson’s (Wellington), Cocker Spaniel, Clover of Brae Villa, 79 points, 2; Master Peter Alien’s Irish' Water Spaniel, Sally of Riversdale, 78 points, 3. Retriever Championship (Mr D. McKenzie’s Cup): Mr M. A. Rawlins’s Labrador, Cleopatra May, F.T.Ch., and Mr T. Beetham's Labrador Cleopatra 11., 97 points, tied; Mr W. Nix’s Labrador Judy, 95 points, 3. In the run off Cleopatra May won. At the conclusion of the main events a limit trial was held and was won by Mr C. E. Grey’s Don (Mrs Harding’s trophy), with Mr W. Drury second and Mr B. Salisbury third. This event was judged by Mr Geo. Birkett.
