BATTLES IN SNOW
ON THE CENTRAL FRONT HEAVY AXIS ATTACK. REPELLED SOUTH-WEST OF STALINGRAD. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, November 28. The “Daily Telegraph's” Stockholm correspondent says that snowstorms are raging on the central front, where General Zhukov's offensive is developing on a 240-mile front between Viazma and Lake Ilmen. German sources state that massed waves of Soviet tanks are attacking under covpr of a terrific artillery bombardment. The Germans threw in Stukas and heavy bombers, regardless of cost, south-west of Kalinin, also south of Toropets,' where the Russians were attempting to smash down the Dvina River to Vitebsk.
According to Berlin, General Zhukov aims to swing south from Toropets toward Smolensk, thus trapping the Germans betwen that area and the Rzhev- 1 Viazma area.
A German force which is trying to fight its way out south of Stalingrad unsuccessfully staged several big attacks yesterday. The “Red Star” states that the Germans have rushed up fresh forces, hoping to halt the Red Army offensive. The Russians south-west of Stalingrad yesterday repelled a powerful tank and infantry attack. YET HEAVIER BLOWS IN STORE FOR GERMANS. MOSCOW PAPER'S ASSURANCE. LONDON, November 29. The latest Moscow communique, referring to the central front, says: “During last night our forces widened the breaches already made in the enemy’s fortifications, and pushed still more deeply into them.” The Moscow “Pravda” says: “If the Germans think they will have a quiet winter they will be mistaken. Heavier blows are in store for them, and they have not yet felt the full force of the Red Army.”
