President Roosevelt presented posthumously the Congressional Medal of Honour to Captain Richard Fleming for extraordinary heroism in the Battle of Midway, on the first day of which Captain Fleming’s plane was hit 179 times. When his squadron leader was shot down, Captain Fleming led his division with fearless determination and dived his own plane to 400 feet before releasing a bomb. Finally Captain Fleming’s plane was hit and fell in flames into the sea. Captain Fleming’s mother was invited to the White House to receive the medal.
