The British Ambassador to the United States, Lord Halifax, told, a Press conference that undoubtedly Italy would like to get out of the war, but Germany would not allow it. There was no love lost between Italy and Germany, a fact which placed added strain on Hitler’s war machine. Italy was not a free country, but as much occupied country as Belgium and France. In answer to a question as to whether Admiral Darlan could be trusted, Lord Halifax said: “Admiral Darlan must be judged by his achievements.”
