DISASTROUS FIRE

SHOPS DESTROYED AT CLINTON. FRUITLESS EFFORT OF BUCKET BRIGADE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, November 25. One of the most disastrous fires in the history of Clinton (74 miles from Dunedin, with a population of 440) destroyed a large part of the business area of that township in the early hours of yesterday morning. Five buildings were razed, an unoccupied shop owned by Mr D. A. McLachlan, the store and offices of Dalgety and Company, the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. offices, a confectionery shop occupied by Mrs W. R. Webb, and the large general store occupied by Mr John Dickinson. The last-named building was formerly the Grand Hotel. There were no fire-fighting appliances and attempts to/check the flames were fruitless. A bucket brigade saved the police and railway premises.
