UNSTINTED PRAISE
FOR AUSTRALIAN WAR EFFORT GIVEN BY AMERICAN ADMIRAL. LACK OF CO-OPERATION DENIED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, November 24. The Washington correspondent of the “Christian Science Monitor” says the chief of the United States Navy’s Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, Rear-Admiral Brent Young, after his return from a tour of inspection in the South Pacific told a Press conference that he had received co-operation from Australian civil and military officials exceeding any reasonable expectations. He added that in view of published private criticisms, he had particularly studied the situation at the Australian docks, where labour difficulties had allegedly caused delay. He was satisfied that the Australian stevedore was delivering more work daily, despite the rest period for tea than the American stevedore. Rear-Admiral Young also said .he knew no grounds for’ the assertions that General MacArthur was having “coalition difficulties.” He further declared that he recognised the political difficulties in removing Australia’s ban on overseas service for the militia, but felt that its removal would be an important gain. He expressed admiration for Mr Curtin’s courage in initiating the matter. The “Monitor” .comments that RearAdmiral Young’s favourable views on Australia’s effort have, helped to readjust Washington opinion on that subject after a heavy swing to the side of the critics due to a coincidental combination of circumstances and reports. ,
