MILD BUT WIDESPREAD
OUTBREAK OF FIREBLIGHT IN WAIRARAPA DISTRICT. PRECAUTIONS NECESSARY. A widely distributed but mild outbreak of fireblight in the Wairarapa district is reported by the Orchard Instructor, Horticulture Division, Department of Agriculture (Mr M. Davey). Owners of fruit trees are advised to cut away and destroy by burning all infected foliage and wood. The disease, which is of bacterial origin, can be recognised by the drying up of the foliage, which assumes a recurved form. The stems are blackened and the bark of the shoots is killed below the scat of infection. Brown staining of the cambuim layers is noticeable on removing the outer bark. The cutting away of infected bark several inches below where the stain has spread is essential, otherwise the disease' continues to extend and further infection from the canker will occur next spring. Specimens of infected foliage may be seen at the Masterton office of the Department of Agriculture.
