Laval’s assistance, to open peace negotiations with M. Stalin. Hitler ordered Laval to appoint the former French Charge d’Affaires in Moscow, M. Jean Payart, French Minister in Sofia, in order to discuss there with the Soviet Minister German peace proposals. Shortly afterward, however, Hitler informed Laval that the appointment , was no longer necessary, and explained that the Soviet had been approached, but closed the doors against any peace parleying.
