ROMMEL’S FLIGHT
AND EIGHTH ARMY CHASE STAND AT EL AGHEILA ■ THOUGHT UNLIKELY. ■ BAD WEATHER HAMPERS PURSUIT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, November 22. Rommel’s rearguard, which is racing to El Agheila after the engagement on the escarpment south of Benghazi, is being hit hard by the Eighth Army’s advanced units, says Reuter’s correspondent in Libya. The enemy is laying big minefields in an effort to gain time while he takes up positions at El Agheila. The present indications are that Rommel will not use the secondary defence line at Agedabia. A clash between the Eighth Army and Rommel’s remnants is expected at any moment. It now seems certain that the Axis will not attempt more than a delaying action at Agedabia, and any fighting that is proceeding there at present is almost certainly merely rearguard opposition. The Cairo correspondent of “The Times” says the question is whether the Axis force will even attempt a stand on the narrow El Agheila front, or will merely use the positions for further delaying tactics while the main force speeds on toward Misurata and Tripoli, where it will possibly embark for Italy. The correspondent states that the decisive factor in this question will probably be the developments in Tunisia Execrable weather continues to hamper both land and air operations. Allied pilots report that snow has been falling in the area of the Axis forces’ retreat.
