BOWLING CHAMPION RINKS COMPETITION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The first games for the Carterton Club champion rinks were played on Saturday. The weather was ideal and the green played splendidly. The afternoon tea arrangements were supervised by Mesdames F. L. Barr and E. T. Beaven, who were accorded a vote of thanks. A rink from the Featherston Club played Carterton, the holders of the Wairarapa Centre Fours, the result being: Carterton, Pankhurst, Simmonds, Tucker, Sorensen (s) beat Talbot, James, McNamara, Thompson (s), 29/17. I Carterton rink games: Hall, Murphy '(sub), Daysh, Hughan (s) beat Beaven, Hawker, Underhill, Barr (s), 27/15; Kilmister, King, Curtis, Harp (s) beat Spooner, Hill, Callender, Harris (s), 17/16; Smith, McCarty, Barber. Hart (s) beat Adams, W. Hart, Martin, Whyte (s), 25/14; Booth, Colson, Newbould, Riggs- (s) beat Foss, Edwards, Bain, Stent (s), 21/19. In a friendly game Clark, Shaw, Steven (s) beat Billington, Toms, De Lacey (s), 18/16. Two new members were elected to the club during the afternoon. LAMBS AND CALVES JUDGING AT CLAREVILLE. The children attending the Clareville School held their annual calf and lamb competitions on Thursday. _ Mr Martin J. Parker, of Dalefield, judged the calves. He stated that the children had taken great care with their calves, the animals being a credit to them. Mr C. Jensen, Jnr., Waihakeke, judged the lambs. The results were: — Calves: Type, Jim Daysh 1, Ray Abbott 2, Marjorie Daysh 3. Care and handling, Ray Abbott 1, Jim Daysh 2, Marjorie Daysh 3. Lambs: Ann Daken 1, Christine Duncan 2, I. Edwards 3. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of the Clareville district. Trespassing at Baths. The caretaker of the Carterton Swimming Baths has notified the borough authorities that the baths have been used by persons after the authorised hours of closing. Last evening he had occasion to pass the baths late in the evening and on investigating the source of some voices he heard found two soldiers and some women swimming in the baths. The caretaker took the names of these trespassers and handed them to the Borough Council.
Red Cross Examination. The following candidates of the Carterton Red Cross sub-centre have passed the examinations held on September 31:—Senior home nursing, Mrs Steffert, Misses Ingley, Vaughan, Newbold. Intermediate first aid: Mesdames Harrington and de Norville. Junior home nursing: Mrs Heatherington (honours), Misses Bowie, E. Peters, D. Ashton, B. Walsh.
Personal Items. Two well-known Carterton ladies, Misses Molly Dunn and Lorna Bannm. left Carterton for Wellington on Saturday, where they will engage m military duties. They were given a warm send off at the station.
The engagement is announced of Betty Robertson, youngest daughter of Mr and the late Mrs A. E. Hack, of Carterton, to Sgt. Gordon Gerald Stewart, youngest son of Mr and Mrs G. D. Stewart, Island Bay, Wellington.
