SUNDAY TEA

GATHERING AT Y.M.C.A. ’ HOSPITALITY MUCH APPRECIATED The weekly , free tea to men of the forces in the Masterton Y.M.C.A. last night was given by the Masterton Post Office staff, being sponsored by the members of the Post Office Social Club. There was a large attendance of men, who did full justice to the excellent fare provided. Mr E. J. Esler. representing the Y.M.C.A., was in the chair. He introduced the Postmaster, Mr M. M. Simpson, who in his remarks referred to the appreciation expressed by business people of the town to the men of the Forces who had rendered efficient assistance during the earthquake. The ladies assisting helped in making the gathering such a success. Reference was made to the work of the ladies of the Y.M.C.A. Auxiliary. The half-minute silence was observed, and Padre Hynes conducted devotiohs.

Miss Douglas with songs, accompanied by Miss Barber, and Mr J. Barnes and his company in orchestral numbers, supplied entertainment for the tea session. The pianists were Mrs Miller Hope and Mr T. Vaughan. Sergt. Fletcher, on behalf of the Army, and A.C.2 Sanko, for the Air Force, suitably expressed thanks to the ladies and to those responsible for providing the tea. The speakers stated that the hospitality received was much appreciated. After tea a period was spent in community singing, assisted by Mr J. Barnes’s orchestra. Later a programme of pictures was supplied by Mr W. H. Saunders. Items were given by members of the League of Mothers’ Choir, under the leadership of Mrs Miller Hope, and a devotional session was conducted by Mr D. Edwards, pastor of the local Baptist Church.
