GENERAL HERTZOG. FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF SOUTH AFRICA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright! LONDON, November 22. The death is announced of General Hertzog, formerly Prime Minister of South Africa. General Hertzog, who was born in April, 1866, was a lawyer by profession. He commanded a section of the Boer forces in the South African war of 1899-1902. He was Minister of Justice in the first Union Cabinet from 1910 to 1912 and Prime Minister of South Africa from 1924 to 1939. On the outbreak of the European war in 1939 he advocated a policy of neutrality tor South Africa and was replaced! a. Lie head of the Government by General Smuts. MR ANDREW BURNS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. Novefnber 21. The death has occurred at Hanmer, at the age of 58, of Mr Andrew Bums, associate editor of the •’Star-Sun, ’ after a brief illness. ; Mr Burns joined the staff of the 'Lyttelton Times” in 1903, and had been continuously engaged in journalism in this city ever since. Handicaped by the loss of an arm when a boy, he showed remarkable resource and determination, and not only taught himself to write with great facility with his left hand, but became one of the most notable shorthand writers in New Zealand. He took a keen interest in tennis, and was for many years connected with the administration of the game.
