ADVANCING RAPIDLY AND PREPARING FOR MASSED ATTACK
On German Defences Round Tunis and Bizerta SWIFT PROGRESS OF EIGHTH ARMY IN LIBYA NO DEFINITE SIGN YET OF ENEMY STAND AT EL AGHEILA LONDON, November 22. The Allied forces in Tunisia are advancing rapidly and preparing’ for a massed attack on the German defensive positions established on an arc of 100 miles around Tunis and Bizerta. In the latest attack on the enemy-occupied aerodrome at '■ Tunis, at least five enemy planes were destroyed on the ground by Allied aircraft. The raid was heavy and hangars and warehouses were also seen to be destroyed. On their way back the Allied bombers were attacked by Messerschmitt 109 s. Four of these were shot down and the others driven off. The enemy port and base of Tripoli has been attacked heavily by Allied bombers. In Libya, forward troops of the Eighth Army have again made contact with the enemy in the region of Agedabra, sixty miles from El Agheila, on the confines of Cyrenaica, There is no indication yet whether Rommel will attempt any serious opposition in the El Agheila bottleneck. General Alexander’s men are now 600 miles ahead of their starting-point. Throughout the advance the R.A.F. has kept just ahead of the land forces, blasting the enemy armoured units and troops and helping to keep them on the run. Captured landing grounds have been put rapidly into use on falling into our hands.
