OBITUARY

MR W. F. DAY. The death occurred at the Pahiatua Hospital of a highly respected settler of the Makomako district in the person of Mr William Filmore Day. He was born in 1865 at the Upper Plain, where his parents were pioneer settlers. When he had reached the age of ten years his father acquired a block of unimproved land at Kopuaranga. He subsequently purchased a bush section of some 800 acres at Mangamahoe. He married in 1904, and shortly afterwards he and his wife moved to Gladstone, where they lived for 14 years, and where the family was born. He went to Makomako 20 years ago and engaged in farming. In his younger days the late Mr Day was a prominent footballer. He played for the Masterton Football Club and was a Wairarapa representative. He was an excellent rifle shot and for many years was a member of the Mauriceville Rifle Club, winning many trophies. In. his younger days he competed with conspicuous success at the annual ploughing matches held in Masterton. He is survived by his wife, five sons, William W. Day, John Day, Ronald Day (Makomako), Frank Day (Gladstone), George Day (serving with the forces in the Middle East), two daughters, Mrs L. Weld (Palmerston North) and Miss Dorothy Day.

MISS E. C. PRENTICE. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital last' night of Miss Emma Clarice Prentice, only daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Joseph P. Prentice, pioneer settlers of Masterton. Miss Prentice had been in ill health for some years. She had resided in the district all her life. She is survived by a brother, Mr A. E. Prentice (Masterton) and an aunt, Miss E. J. Prentice (Lansdowne). The funeral will be a private one.
