In Latest Solomons Battle POINT MADE BY ADMIRAL NIMITZ ENEMY DOUBLE THRUST DEFEATED (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) PEARL HARBOUR, November 17. Admiral Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the United States Pacific Fleet, said: “The Japanese had been concentrated in the Rabaul area for a double thrust against Guadalcanal and New Guinea, but I think they will be disappointed in both cases. The enemy fleet came in several directions, from the north and north-west. They brought everything they had, undoubtedly bringing heavy equipment, tanks and shore artillery—everything they needed. However, the Japanese did not bring air-craft-carrierq. Either they did not have any left, or did not choose to risk them.’’ Admiral Nimitz’s aide-de-camp said later that the Unitea States had made great use of carriers and of carrier-based aircraft.
