FURTHER ATTACKS
ON ENEMY NAVAL FORCES MADE BY LAND-BASED BOMBERS. JAPANESE LOSSES SINCE EARLY AUGUST. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY November 16. The Japanese naval forces' which remain in Solomons waters after the smashing victory of the American fleet have again been under attack by Flying Fortresses of General MacArthur's command in a further night raid on enemy shipping in the BuinFaisi area which was made early on Monday morning. A destroyer and a transport were damaged. This was the sixth consecutive night raid made by bombers .of the SouthWest Pacific command on Japanese shipping in that area, and in the attacks 13 vessels have been damaged. The sea and air fighting in the Solomons has now cost Japan 113 ships sunk or damaged and 610 planes destroyed since August 7.
GREAT SUCCESSES
ACHIEVED BY ALLIES. BUT MUCH YET TO BE DONE. (Received This Day, 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, November 17. '‘The Solomons naval victory brings an indescribable sense of relief,’’ comments the New York “Herald-Tribune.” “Dispatches from Casablanca, describing the damage inflicted on the Jean Bart by American sixteen-inch shells, suggested to anyone knowing how few sixteen-inch gun battleships we have, that the South-west Pacific position was being risked for the North African offensives. Such risks are legitimate and necessary in war, but cause anxious moments. The Allies have achieved great successes in the Far East, the Mediterranean and the Caucasus, but these successes are not a final triumph. The enemy is still strong, daring and resolute, and we must expect surprises and prepare for reverses. The moment is brighter than any in three years. The great struggle to translate its brilliant promise into actuality still calls for everything we have to give.”
