DARLAN’S STATUS

DESCRIBED AS TEMPORARY. LONDON, November 16. The 8.8. C. European service threw some light on Darlan’s status in this announcement: “Unofficial British ana American Press comment has taken a critical attitude of the acceptance of Darlan’s assistance. In Algeria it is understood that Darlan was accepted in his present functions for strictly military reasons because, it was desirable to ensure that civilian services were smoothly operated while the fighting continues.” The announcer also quoted the diplomatic correspondent of “The Times” as saying: “Darlan enjoys temporary status which might have its uses in expediting a broad armistice which the Allies desire as leading to the setting up of a solid authority.”
