“ONE ENEMY”
BROADCAST BY GIRAUD ON TAKING OVER COMMAND. HARD TASK IN PROSPECT. (British Official Wireless.) ’ RUGBY, November 15. • A proclamation has been issued by General, Giraud, and broadcast by Morocco radio, stating: “I have been appointed by Admiral Darlan to assume the command of the ground and air forces in Africa. I know you, and you know me. We have only one enemy—the enemy who has occupied our country and is holding 1,000,000 of our comrades as prisoners. We will chase him, first out of Africa and then out of France. “The task will be hard. Otfr enemy is brave and well equipped . I am certain you will stand up splendidly in this fight in order to show what you are capable of. Whoever has taken up arms against you has paid a tribute to your valour. ' I salute, with painful emotion, those brave men who have heroically sacrificed themselves to their ideals. We are united in our loss of France, and we have only one passion—victory.” The Vichy radio says that Marshal Petain has forbidden General Giraud, whom he called a traitor, to act in his name. The Rabat radio broadcast a proclamation by Admiral Darlan stating: “Since communication with the mother country has been interrupted owing to German control, I appeal to all Legionaries, officials, officers, non-commis-sioned officers, and men of the sea and air forces, who have obeyed so far Marshal Petain’s orders, to take them now from me, who represent the interests of the French Empire and the mother country. General Giraud is again leading his forces in honour against the enemy.”
