DRASTIC ACTION

AGAINST UNITED STATES 1 SENATORS ABSENTING THEMSELVES FROM SITTINGS. WARRANTS FOR ARREST ISSUED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) NEW YORK, November 15. Because of filibuster tactics, intended as delaying action against the poll tax repeal changing, on the second day, from stonewalling oratory to absenteeism to prevent a quorum, the Senate ordered the arrest of eight absenting members, six of whom are from Southern poll tax States, says the “New York Times” Washington correspondent. This drastic action was directed on a motion by Senator Barkley, Democratic Leader, to instruct the Vice-President, Mi- H. Wallace, to sign the warrants. Senator McKellar was actually arrested by the Deputy-Ser-geant-at-Arms after a maid had unlocked the door of his hotel suite. Senators Maybank and Bunker were placed under technical arrest. The Senate adjourned with the situation not further clarified or advanced. Senator Barkley intimated that he would renew his motion to call up the Bill on Monday. Word was sent to the absent Senators to attend on Monday. Meanwhile the warrants will be held in abeyance.
