SAVAGE MEMORIAL HALL

OPENED AT NGAKAWAU, BY MINISTER OF LABOUR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WESTPORT, November 15. The Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, officially opened the M. J. Savage Memorial Hall at Ngakawau on Saturday in the presence of a large gathering, which included delegates from all political and industrial organisations in the Buller district. The Minister paid warm tribute to the late Prime Minister, stressing the importance of the humanitarian legislation for which he was responsible. He referred also to the severe loss to the Labour organisation that the death of Mr Armstrong had been. Mr Fraser was held in similar affection and esteem for the able manner in which he was carrying out his duties as head of the present Government. Among other speakers at the gathering were Mr S. R. Johnston, chairman of the Hector Committee, Mr C. Martin, Mr J. Adams, president of the Buller Labour Representation Committee, Mr J. Ward, Buller county chairman, Mr T. W. Grace, secretary of the Millerton Miners’ Union, Mr J. M. Robertson, mayor of Westport, and Mr J. Dowgray, director of the Bank of New Zealand, all of whom said they hoped the memorial would be an inspiration to others to follow worthily in the footsteps of the late Mr Savage and make theirs the principles that inspired him in public service for the good of humanity.
